Deciding which company is right for you

Section 6 : What about work-life balance?

100%

If you’re an ambitious go-getter that thrives on 60-hour weeks, work-life balance might not be important to you. Otherwise, ask about the company’s expectations. Do they require unpaid overtime? How often is weekend work necessary? Can you expect fairly regular hours, or will your schedule be unpredictable?

Don’t choose a position that will dominate your life unless it’s something you’re genuinely passionate about or if it ticks all of your other boxes. Burnout is a real possibility if you get the work-life equation wrong.

Yes, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. If you’ve gotten an offer, don’t reject it lightly. Do your due diligence. Remember that few positions are perfect. Decide which factors are most important to you, what you can live with, and what are deal-breakers. If, on the whole, the position seems to fit, you should consider moving forward.
