The importance of accountability

Section 3 : Ask questions when accountability is weak

100%

When one of the parties in a mentorship feels the other isn’t pulling their weight, they shouldn’t accuse them, berate them, or lay down the law. Particularly when this is directed at the mentee it can shut them down and prevent progress.

Instead, the offended party should challenge the other to answer questions about their actions. This is less combative and more constructive.

Questions like, “Why is it that you think you didn’t get this objective done?” or, “What do you think might happen if you consistently miss this opportunity” open up a discussion. It motivates the other person to think about what they did. It can uncover hidden problems that can lead to a breakthrough and rekindle commitment.

In the end, a mutually supportive mentoring relationship that values accountability above all else can create enormous value for both parties.
