Feedback that’s too nebulous accomplishes very little. Advice like, “You need to work on your interview skills,” doesn’t offer practical value because it assumes the mentee knows where they’re lacking. If they did, they wouldn’t need mentoring.

Instead, mentors should pick specific items that need improvement. Helpful advice might include working on eye contact, answering questions confidently, and learning from prospective employers ahead of time. Concentrating on these clearly defined items will lead to improvements in the mentee’s overall skill.
