Build rapport with your mentor

Section 4 : Prepping for the mentoring meeting

80%

If your mentor asks you to meet them at their office or via skype, make sure to dress appropriately.  Don’t go to mentoring meetings looking sloppy or casual.  Treat each meeting as an opportunity to practice and improve your interview skills.  Even if you are meeting in a more informal setting, keep it professional.

Before you meet with your mentor, write down a list of goals and action items that you would like to discuss with your mentor.  Also, create a list of questions you have and write them down.

Several days before the meeting, make sure you send your mentor a proposed agenda for the meeting.  Use the list of goals, action items and questions to shape the agenda.  If your meeting involves reviewing a document, then send the document along with the agenda in advance, so your mentor will have time to review it before the meeting.  In the email, ask your mentor to read them and offer suggestions for improving the document.

A good mentor will be not only willing to listen to you, but will provide you with invaluable insights and ideas on how to make you the strongest candidate for a job.  Go over your goals with them and get their feedback concerning your timeline and your plans for achieving your goals.
