Build rapport with your mentor

Section 2 : Creating a great mentoring relationship

40%

Depending on your mentor’s own personal style, you may develop a very structured or a more relaxed rapport. Your mentor may ask you to meet them in their offices or you may meet more informally outside of work for coffee or a lunch. Depending on your proximity to your mentor, meetings may also be held exclusively over the phone.

The most important thing to remember is, regardless of the relationship style, you want to always keep it professional. Be friendly and open to the advice and suggestions your mentor provides. Remember, they agreed to help you, so their advice should be carefully considered. Always say thank you to them for their time and follow up with a thank you note after each meeting. Your mentors may turn into potential references down the road!
