Leah Anderson, PhD, is a Senior Regulatory Affairs Associate at Kenvue. In her role she provides regulatory guidance to local and global business partners, enabling advancement of business growth objectives. As a part of the Skin Health & Beauty Regulatory Affairs Team at Kenvue, she supports hair care brands like Rogaine, Maui Moisture and OGX.

What is the highest degree you have earned and what can you tell us about your academic path?

Prior to pursuing my Ph.D., I studied Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University, which enabled me to leverage that skillset and expertise to study biological systems and conduct biomedical research. In 2023, I completed my Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, where I investigated biomaterial delivery strategies for the prevention of muscle degeneration after severe rotator cuff tear.

Where do you work now and what is your company about?

I work at Kenvue. As a global consumer health leader, Kenvue is about realizing the extraordinary power of everyday care. We strive to create meaningful products that meet the everyday needs of consumers.

How did you first learn about the company?

I am grateful for SMDP providing me with mentorship and connectivity to the people who would ultimately become part of the Kenvue SMDP community I am a part of today. Through SMDP, I attended a Johnson & Johnson open house, where I had the chance to learn about J&J and the future of the consumer health spinoff: Kenvue. Having the opportunity to interact with fellow scholars, SMDP Alumni, and leadership across Kenvue, led to a number of meaningful conversations about my future. Those experiences helped to solidify Kenvue as a place I would want to make an impact at.

What do you like most about the company?

What I like most about Kenvue is the focus on caring for those we serve. Not only does everyone work together for the well-being of the consumer, but we are also willing to help each other grow and learn in the process.

What skills make you successful in your role and why did you choose this role?

The skills that make me successful in my role are attention to detail, collaboration, and clear communication. It is a common misconception that regulatory affairs work is done in solitude. However, I find that my role is an incredibly collaborative one that requires frequent cross-functional communication. These skills were an integral part of my success as a scientist during my Ph.D. and have translated well into this role.

How do you define success?

I define success as accomplishing the goals you have set for yourself, regardless of the timeline and path you take to achieve those goals. This can look different for everyone, and learning from your setbacks is a huge part of that.

What's the most fulfilling aspect of your job?

Regulatory Affairs is a complex and evolving field that requires learning, problem solving and creativity. I am fulfilled by embracing this challenge, while knowing I affect products that allow consumers to look and feel their best.

What advice do you have for students and job seekers?

I would encourage students and job seekers to network! It’s never too early (or too late) to start building relationships. Expanding your network not only provides you with exposure to different careers or career paths within many industries, but could also help trigger the chain of events that lands you an exciting opportunity.
