Mentorships are most effective when mentors push mentees out of their comfort zones and help them take important steps they might not do independently. In response, mentees must be willing to do what’s required of them, or they’re wasting their mentor’s time.

Similarly, mentors need to be prepared to pour the necessary time and mental energy into carrying their end of the relationship. If they let their busy schedules interfere with their commitment to their mentee, they’re doing their pupil a disservice.
