Almost anyone can be a mentor, but some are more appropriate than others, depending on the mentee’s needs and goals.
Ideally, a mentor should be someone well-placed and experienced in their field. The mentor should be strong in the areas where their mentee needs to grow. The mentor’s strengths should complement, not duplicate their own.
Mentorships provide students or mentees the opportunity to benefit from another’s experience. The more relevant that experience is to the mentee’s career path, the greater the impact. Remember that you can have more than one mentor. Leveraging two or three with widely disparate perspectives can offer excellent growth opportunities.
