One of the most effective ways to leave a great first impression on a team is by jumping in and embracing your new colleagues early. While it may be tempting to take it slow and get a feel for the team dynamics, you may miss the chance to frame the narrative about yourself if you don’t get your hands dirty quickly. Rather than stand on the shore, swim out and get involved immediately.
On your first day, take the time (and the initiative) to meet as many of your new team members as possible. Ask people questions about them, instead of merely referring to the job itself. As you build a comfort level with various members of the team, you will find that others will begin to trust you and welcome you into the department more naturally - setting the stage for a faster acclimation.
