Turn job search contacts into results

Section 1 : Making connections count

20%

Networking is often seen as a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. At its core, networking is simply about building relationships with others in your industry or field of interest.

Meaningful connections are the foundation of successful networking. Rather than just collecting contacts, focus on forming genuine relationships that are mutually beneficial. Each interaction presents an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills, expertise, and interests while also learning from others.

Networking is about who you know - but of even greater importance, it’s about how well you strengthen your relationships with the people in your network and how you continuously engage them. Authenticity is key here. When you approach networking with a genuine interest in others and a willingness to contribute value, you're more likely to develop lasting connections. Whether you're attending industry events, participating in informational interviews, or engaging on online platforms, focus on building rapport and finding common ground. Ask thoughtful questions, actively listen, and show genuine curiosity about the other person's experiences and insights. Also, offer to be of assistance, by saying, “please let me know if I can ever be of help to you.”

Remember it’s not just about you here. Most of the time, especially during job searches, it’s easy to just think about what we can gain from others - but we must also remember that bonds are formed when we reciprocate and also offer to be of help. Look for opportunities to provide support, share resources, and contribute to the success of your new and old connections. Prioritizing meaningful interactions and genuine relationships, will not only expand your professional network but also build your profile as someone of value, thereby creating opportunities for collaboration, mentorship and career advancement.
