Be ready to respond when opportunity knocks. Don't ruin your chance to impress a potential employer by carelessly updating your resume at the last minute. Here are some things to consider:

  • Employers are typically most interested in the past 10 or 15 years of your work history.
  • Highlight actual, quantifiable accomplishments
  • Tailor your résumé to each job.  Keywords are the difference between being found at the top of the list or not at all.
  • Keep it under two pages.
  • No employer cares what you want, so consider omitting the objective statement.
  • Make it easy to read. Employers who read hundreds of résumés will glance at them for as few as 10 seconds before deciding to read them at length. Use shorter word blocks, three to four lines at most. Little things lіkе misspelled names, smudges, disjointed content, оmіttеd іnfоrmаtіоn аnd unneeded creativity will lessen уоur chances оf gеttіng thаt job interview.
  • Keep it brief!  Don’t bog down a reader with long paragraphs. Use bullets and highlights. They want to look at your resume and know at a glance what you can bring to the company. Save the paragraphs for your novel.
  • Make sure your name and contact information are at the top of the resume and are easy to read.
  • Don’t cramp the page with lots of tiny type. Streamline your resume to include the most important information and make it easy to read.
