How to be an effective mentee

Section 3 : Be open to feedback and constructive criticism

75%

No one loves hearing they’ve made a mistake, but the truth is, feedback is your friend. If you find your mentor giving you some tough criticism, don’t get defensive. Instead, take a moment to reflect. What can you learn from this? The more you’re able to accept and act on feedback, the faster you’ll grow.

Let’s say your mentor points out that you’ve been procrastinating or not managing your time well. It might sting to hear, but this is your chance to improve. Instead of making excuses, ask for advice on how to handle it better next time. This attitude not only shows maturity but also highlights your commitment to becoming better.

Remember, feedback is a two-way street. If something in your mentorship isn’t working for you, speak up. Your mentor can’t adjust if they don’t know what you need. Be honest and open - it’ll only strengthen the relationship.
