Reality is, when we are about to take the next step or make some big changes, we rarely think we are ready. We are always needing more time, we think we are not the right person for the opportunity. And then your mentor comes along and says, “Apply anyway. Say yes anyway. Try anyway.” Majority of the time they are not pushing you because you are already ready. They do it because sometimes, that’s the only way you’ll see what you are actually capable of. Only great mentors do this.
What they’re doing is creating stretch. That space where you have to grow to meet the moment. And yes, it’s uncomfortable. But it’s also how you learn to back yourself. They know you might not rise to the challenge unless someone you respect gives you the uncomfortable permission to go for it.
