It’s helpful in any discussion to give mentees credit for their accomplishments before moving on to what’s lacking. They’re more likely to respond favorably to critical feedback when you first acknowledge their contributions.

You might say, “I thought you did an excellent job compiling questions for your interview. Now we just need to refine your approach.” Validating what they did right opens them to hearing what could be improved.
