Anyone can get lucky because luck is random. In fact, sometimes it takes no effort at all. For example, someone is walking and they bump into the right person at the right time, or they overhear something by chance and it opens a door for them. That happens. How is it luck though when you are the one who reached out and asked the question? When you made the first call and then followed up, maybe more than once? When you are the one who did the prep and applied, even when you weren’t sure what would come of it?
When people say, “You’re so lucky to have gotten that opportunity,” what they should be saying is, “You put yourself in a position to be considered,” or even just, “Congratulations. You did the work.”
Maybe there was a moment of good timing or a helpful introduction along the way, but none of that would have mattered if you had not already done the groundwork. If you had not shown that you were ready. Opportunities don’t turn into outcomes unless someone is prepared to handle them. You positioned yourself and came across as someone who was ready and things happened for you.
