People are complex beings shaped by their experiences and beliefs. We may wish to modify their behavior or mindset, but it's crucial to recognize the limitations of our influence. While we may not be able to change people, we can cultivate empathy and understanding towards our colleagues' perspectives and experiences. By stepping into their shoes and seeing the world through their eyes, we gain insight into the influences shaping their perspectives, beliefs and actions. This empathy generates compassion and allows us to approach interactions with patience and kindness, even amidst differences. While understanding does not necessarily lead to agreement, it lays the foundation for mutual respect and acceptance in the workplace.
For instance, consider a scenario in the workplace where a team member consistently arrives late to meetings and often misses deadlines. Initially, their behavior might frustrate colleagues, who perceive them as irresponsible and unreliable. Instead of immediately confronting the individual or passing judgment, understanding their circumstances can provide invaluable insights. A team leader may for example discover the individual is a single parent, or is having challenges getting to work. In response and especially in this day and age, the team could explore remote work options, flexible working hours, or assistance with transportation, allowing the individual to better manage their responsibilities without compromising their work commitments.
