Why people hate change

Description

College is a crash course in change. Each semester you take new classes, meet new people, and alter your living situation. It culminates with a harrowing transition into working life. You might think that after more than four years of this, you’d be comfortable with change. But humans have a deep-seated inertia that works hard to try and keep them where they are. We hate change, and we’re learning why.

Summary

Whoever said, “Change is good” wasn’t considering the realities of human nature. It might benefit us in the end, but change is rarely greeted with enthusiasm. Whether mildly or with every fiber of our being, most of us resist it.

But why should we fight so stridently against something which is inevitable? Nothing remains constant for long. Right when we finally get comfortable with how things are, they take a left turn. It would seem that better-adapted creatures would live in harmony with this process. But it turns out there are good reasons why people hate change. We’re just wired that way.
