The importance of accountability

Description

A mentoring relationship is based on mutual respect and trust. For it to work, both parties need to be willing to commit to their responsibilities and do everything in their power to satisfy their obligations.

Mentors are charged with helping their mentees develop into responsible, capable people. To do this, they must commit to keeping their mentee focused on their goals. They sometimes need to ask difficult questions and share the unvarnished truth.

Human nature sometimes admits self-deception, and it’s the responsibility of the mentor to recognize when the mentee isn’t being honest with themselves and gently confront them. The mentor’s commitment is one of patient guidance that seeks to bring the best out of the other person, even it’s sometimes painful.

Summary

Mentees must make commitments of their own. They need to heed their mentor’s advice and do the work necessary to make consistent improvements in themselves. It’s their responsibility to try and get as much out of the mentorship as they can. If they stop taking it seriously, they’re letting their mentor down. A lack of commitment from the mentee can make it very difficult for their mentor to maintain their own commitments.
