Your resume is usually the very first thing an employer sees that represents you, and our goal is to make sure that what they see is an employee they have to hire! We want them to look at your resume or CV and say to themselves "Holy cow, why is this person not already working here?" Yes, really. We want them to say that…and in order for that to happen, we have to make sure your resume is solid.
This takes a little tailoring, but luckily, by now you should already have done a ton of research on the companies you want to work for. Now take that information and use it to focus the relevant information on your resume. Also take stock of your relevant and transferrable job skills. Those are the skills that directly relate to your job. Review the provided list and really focus on the strongest ones. Write a brief example of how you have demonstrated each of the top 10 skills in a job or relevant activity. This will help you as you tailor your resume as well as help you prep for interviews.
Summary
Make sure to keep your resume is updated and current. Build several resumes tailored for separate job searches so that at a moment's notice you can have the right resume ready for a potential employer. Remember that keywords are the difference between being at the top of the list and not on the list at all. Keep it succinct and clean. Too many words will lose a recruiter's interest, too few will make you look inexperienced. It's all about balance! Now is the time to ask your mentor for help as well. Ask them if they'd look over your resume with a set of fresh eyes and give you their honest feedback. If you have friends or contacts already working in the field you want to work in, ask if you can see their resumes as well.
