How to read people

Description

There’s often a disconnect between what people say and what they really think. Learning to read the subtle, nonverbal cues that people give off can grant you insight into what they’re thinking. This helps you rate the quality of the information you get from them and your ability to communicate effectively.

Summary

What we say represents just a small portion of what we communicate. Humans leak information about what’s going on in their heads through a number of channels, usually without any awareness that they’re doing it. We share information through our tone of voice, body language, microexpressions, and external identity cues.

With practice, it’s possible to learn how to read these nonverbal indicators. When you “listen” to everything a person is communicating, and not just what the words they’re speaking, you get a much more complete picture of what they’re saying. And when you understand what’s going on in someone’s head, you can choose your words more effectively.
