When good things happen, people are quick to call it luck. They will say you are lucky to have that job, lucky to have made it, lucky to be where you are. And you might say so too sometimes. Maybe because it feels easier than explaining all the things you had to do just to be standing where you are now. Maybe because you don’t want to sound like you are bragging. Or maybe because a part of you still struggles to believe you have actually earned it.
The thing is it wasn’t really just luck was it? It took a lot of effort and it was all those small choices you made consistently. You tried again and again after things didn’t work out, stayed up late and asked for help, said no to things so you could stay focused. It was the work and the people calling it luck just either didn’t get to see that part, or are willfully refusing to acknowledge it. Yes maybe luck played a part, but it feels minimizing when it’s all reduced to that.
Summary
People, sometimes even to ourselves, like to point to luck or “connections” when something goes right in our lives. Let’s not let that take away from what you have done because you know it took more than luck for all this to happen. Sometimes we do not even question it when people say it’s luck and maybe that’s because deep down we still feel like we haven’t done enough yet or we are not even close to where we want to be. We have not taken the time to stop and look back at how far we have come. The fact that someone is calling it luck at all means you have done something. So you have to recognize that you did not just land here. You worked for it and should therefore own that proudly.
